Apartment Renovation

For a family in Stuttgart two smaller apartments (2LDK /3LDK) have been connected and redeveloped to set up a space of 150 m2. While generous space for kitchen, bath- and living rooms were required, the building materials had to be absolut low cost.

To meet the spatial requirements for the bathroom and kitchen, the adjacent porches were integrated into each room. Cheap Pine panels, normally used to protect cargo goods, were used as main building material and customized for the different interior situations: flooring, sleeping platform, kitchen.

The spirit of japanese lifestyle served as an inspiring example and was interpreted for the bathroom and the parents bedroom.

The former porche was integrate into the bathroom to create space for a hugh bathing tub, specially designed for and done in epoxy resin. While the bathing and shower situation is an interpretation of japanese "sento" – where bathing culture is connected to gathering with family and friends – the colour concept was inspired by natural and cavernous associations.

The living room is dominated by a wall-sized bookshelf and large-sized flooring boards in light grey, both done in pine panels normally used to protect cargo goods. The window openings in the wall and the door bring light into the adjacent corridor. The corridor itself is dominated by the windows reflecting the different light an colour situations behind.
